I’m a bit of a postcard connoisseur. It’s a by-product of a tradition held between me and my long-time friend, Lee. The tradition goes like this: every once in awhile I send her a postcard with something funny, or wry, or clever written on it, and she doesn’t do anything in response. We’re both very comfortable with this ritual. So whenever I’m in a gift shop or bookstore, I peruse the postcard section to see what they have. And I’ve noticed this about nearly every postcard I see: they have pictures on the front. Of course, to stand up on their own, they have to be very strong images that tell a story…but the only problem with that is I’m used to telling stories with words. So I inevitably have to turn over the postcard and write something there about the picture on the front.

Well, I’ve decided to do something about this. I’m in the process of creating postcards with the writing on the front. I call them FlashCards. Because on the front of every “FlashCard” postcard is a creatively entertaining work of flash fiction or non-fiction.
